We both began our trip from separate starting points. Douglas from Malibu, California and I from Madison, Wisconsin. He traveled through Frankfort, Germany and I through Munich. We both arrived in Marseille within the same hour and met at the baggage claim area in the Marseille airport.
My brother actually had some professional purpose to be in France. He was to speak at a university in Aix-en-Provence. The professor organizing this event met us at the airport in Marseille and drove us the 45 minutes north to Aix-en-Provence. We were brought to the Hotel Cardinal in the heart of the old city in Aix. It was an elegant, European style residence.
This fountain in Aix-en-Provence is at one end of the Cours Mirabeau. This is the "Champs-Elysees of Provence". One side of this key street is all expensive shops and banks and the other side is all side walk cafes that are "the" place to be, watching people stroll by.
Our room at the Hotel Cardinal.
The view from our hotel window.
The Rue Cardinal ends with the Place St-Jean de Malte. Just to the right of the church is an art museum, Musee Granet.
We finished our first day in France on the Cours Mirabeau at a restaurant that served beouf. (beef)
